What Retrenched Graduates over 50 really need to know from MOM's latest labour market data
We all know that if you're over 50 and hold a degree, you're a prime target for retrenchment… but as I always tell my good friend, NTUC Asst Sec-Gen
Patrick Tay Teck Guan
, the number that worries me more isn't the Retrenchment Rate, but the 'Re-entry Rate'.
The "Re-Entry Rate" is the share of retrenched residents who were re-employed within 6 or 12 months of being retrenched. It's basically a measure of how many people landed a job within the captured period. Obviously, the higher, the better.
More Graduates Above 50 Are Getting Retrenched… And Took Longer Time To Find A Role Than Before

Degree holders saw the sharpest rise in retrenchment incidence, from 2.6 to 3.1 per 1,000 resident employees in the first quarter of 2026. Workers aged 50 to 59 also faced the highest incidence among all age groups, rising from 2.8 to 3.1.
The job search also became harder. By the second quarter, only 41.9% of retrenched residents aged 50 to 59 had found work within six months—down sharply from 51.8%. Across all retrenched residents, the rate fell from 60.7% to 54.9%. If you are in your 50s and struggling to get back into work, the data confirms it: The market has genuinely become tougher.
But Here's The Hidden Truth Nobody Tells You…
I was initially worried about this sharp decrease in this group being re-hired… but MOM also tracks the 12 month Re-entry Rate and I was pleasantly surprised with it.

Even though those above 50 took longer to land a job, by the 12 month mark, 69.4% of those retrenched found a role! (I tend to look at that remaining 30.6% as those who decided to exit the market or take on portfolio careers, so things ain't that bad, actually)
Look at the twelve-month figures instead of the six-month ones, and the picture steadies out considerably. Nationally, the twelve-month re-entry rate barely moved even while the six-month number swung around underneath it, holding at 69.4% in the first quarter of 2026 and 69.8% in the second. The most recent full year of tracking we have for the 50 to 59 age band specifically put their twelve-month re-entry rate above 63%, meaningfully higher than their own six-month figure and a reminder that this group simply needs a longer runway, not a lost cause.
If you analyse those two numbers side by side, the honest takeaway is this: the first six months are the hardest stretch of the search, and then the odds tilt back in your favour, so you just gotta hang on!!
And When You Land, You Tend To Land Well
Patience isn't the only reward here, quality is too.

From our experience coaching hundreds of retrenched PMETs, many above 50, we see that if they are properly prepared, they tend to 'Land Upwards' into better roles.
MoM Data agrees with our experience – among residents aged 50 to 59 specifically, roughly 8 in 10 who found new roles landed at a similar or higher skill level rather than taking a step down.
But Why The Delay?
From our Coaching experience, we can cite several reasons why it took longer for this crowd to land better jobs:

1️⃣Being more senior/more expensive/more niched, there were fewer openings at their level, so the search just took longer.
2️⃣Many received generous Retrenchment Payouts and were in no rush to get into Jobhunting-mode, so they simply took their time to take a long vacation, whilst others took time to re-skill using the SkillsFuture Programs.
3️⃣A lot of our retrenched clients were more selective of the roles – at that stage of their career, they took time to reflect on their career strategy and pursued only the roles they wanted and were willing to wait for them.
The Takeaway
So… if you're over 50 and just got retrenched, don't fret.

The six-month window you're in right now is definitely tougher than it was a year ago, but fon't be discouraged. The twelve-month data shows that most people in your position who want to keep working full-time do find their way back, and most of them land at equal footing or better!
The task in front of you isn't to beat yourself up, or to beat the six-month clock… It's to use that precious time well so that when you do land, you land where you actually want to be.
