Ghost Jobs: A Third Of Listings May Not Be Real — And The Silence Isn’t About You

One in three job listings may be a “ghost job.” If your applications vanish into silence, the problem isn’t you — it’s a market that has gone dark.

You have fired off eighty applications and heard nothing back — not a rejection, not even an automated “thanks, but no thanks.” Before you decide the problem is you, consider this: a good number of those jobs may never have existed in the first place.

Welcome to the age of the “ghost job” — a role that is advertised online but is not actually being filled. And the scale of it is genuinely startling.

Recruiters and analysts now estimate that as many as one in three online listings are ghost jobs. A MyPerfectResume survey found that 81% of recruiters admit their employer has posted one. In a separate poll, 40% of hiring managers said their company had advertised a ghost job in the past year, and 30% confessed they had one live at that very moment. A March 2026 survey found that 47% of job seekers had applied to a role that never existed.

The macro numbers tell the same story. In March 2026, US employers reported 6.9 million openings but made only 5.6 million hires — leaving roughly 1.3 million “jobs” a month that nobody ever walked through.

And it is not only the fake postings. Hiring itself has gone quiet and opaque. Roughly 40% of employers now use AI to write job descriptions, screen CVs and rank candidates long before a human ever sees your name. Even the real roles can feel like shouting into a well.

Here in Singapore, where the market is churning — retrenchments at a five-year high even as overall hiring grows — that opacity is doubly cruel. So let me be blunt with you.

1. That Wall Of Silence Is Not A Verdict On You

Every week we coach talented people who have quietly concluded they are unemployable. They are not. They are applying into a system that was never going to reply.

If half the doors you are knocking on are painted onto the wall, silence is not feedback — it is noise. Stop reading it as a scorecard of your worth.

2. Spray-And-Pray Now Feeds The Machine, Not Your Career

The old instinct in a frightening market is to apply to everything. In 2026, that instinct is quietly working against you.

Every application you fire into a ghost listing costs you time, energy and morale — and returns nothing, because there is nobody on the other side. Worse, it keeps you busy enough to feel productive while your real search stalls. Volume is not a strategy. It is a very convincing way to avoid the harder work.

3. Go Where The Jobs Are Real — Which Means Going Human

Real roles are still being filled every day. They are simply being filled through people, not portals.

So flip your ratio. For every ten hours you spend on job boards, spend at least six on conversations — former colleagues, industry contacts, and yes, headhunters who actually know which mandates are live. Before you pour a week into an application, ask directly: “Is this role real, and is it moving?” The hidden job market is not a myth. It is precisely where the un-ghosted jobs live.

In Closing — Stop Auditioning For Roles That Don’t Exist

Ghost jobs are not your fault. But falling for them is now a career risk you can actually manage.

  1. Silence from a job board tells you about the board, not about you.
  2. Ten targeted conversations will out-perform a hundred cold applications — every single time.
  3. Verify before you invest. A real role has a real person behind it. Go and find that person.

The market has gone dark, my friends. So stop waiting by a door that was painted shut — and go find the ones that actually open.

Stay agile, my friends!
